Identify the US filing starting point

US citizens and resident aliens generally report worldwide income when the applicable filing requirements are met, even while living abroad. Low income, an exclusion or a foreign tax payment should not be confused with an automatic exemption from filing. Self-employment can trigger a filing requirement at a much lower net-income level than the usual income threshold.

Map each place where you worked

Create a calendar showing physical work locations, nonworking travel and available homes. Record employment versus independent contracting, the employer or client location, and any local registration. Country residence tests, work authorization, payroll rules and business exposure are separate questions. A tourist stay or a digital-nomad visa does not automatically exempt earnings from local tax.

Resolve the state connection

An established state domicile may continue during travel. A genuine foreign domicile can matter, but a departure needs to be assessed under the former state’s rules. Some states also tax nonresidents on work, property or business income sourced there. Use the guide to domicile, residence and tax home to keep those tests separate.

Select the federal relief calculation

FEIE requires qualifying earned income, a foreign tax home and a residence or presence test. The foreign tax credit requires eligible foreign taxes and applies income-category limitations. Neither is a substitute for first identifying taxable income. Compare the two scenarios with self-employment tax and nonexcluded income included.

Assemble the annual handoff

  • Travel calendar and home availability.
  • Worldwide wage, business, investment and rental records.
  • Foreign income-tax assessments and payment evidence.
  • Maximum foreign-account balances and ownership interests.
  • Prior elections, carryovers and state returns.

Use the filing checklist to turn that packet into a list of returns and reporting deadlines.

Frequently asked questions

Does moving frequently make me tax resident nowhere?
No. Citizenship-based filing, continuing domicile, local residence and source-income rules can still apply.
Is a nomad visa a tax exemption?
Not by itself. Immigration permission and tax treatment have different conditions.
Is mail forwarding enough to end former-state tax?
No. The underlying move and the former state’s rules control.

Can You Keep Florida Residency After Selling Your House? The 2027 Guide for Full-Time Travelers

Selling your Florida house to travel full time does not, by itself, end your Florida domicile. A May 2026 Third District Court of Appeal decision reaffirmed that an established domicile continues until a new one replaces it. What the sale does change is every record that pointed at the house: your driver license address (30 days to fix under Fla. Stat. 322.19), your voter registration, your mail, your banks, the IRS and Social Security. This guide separates mailing address, residential address and domicile, walks through the statutes, and gives you the before-closing checklist.
